Nervous Patients

At Cherry Dental we understand that dental phobia is very common but, whatever your dental fears or concerns, we understand and are here to help! We will do everything possible to make you feel calmer and more relaxed during your treatment.

How we can help if you're a nervous patient

We offer both inhalation sedation and intravenous sedation for certain treatments. We will plan your treatment with you and make a decision accordingly as to which one is most suitable.

Inhalation sedation is available for children and adults and it can help you relax while on the chair – it is perfectly safe for all ages and is reversible so you will not need an escort to take you home afterwards. The sedation is lighter and routinely used for children.

Intravenous sedation is available on all treatments we offer at our clinic. It involves a small needle in the back of the hand or arm to administer a drug into the blood supply. It relaxes you completely, allowing you to undergo treatments without any nervousness at all! Although you will be fully conscious, there is a slight amnesic effect so you won’t recall the unpleasant details of your treatment. Sedation is the best supplementary if you are anxious about your treatment.

More information on IV sedation:

Intravenous sedation helps to make lengthy or complex dental treatment much more comfortable and easy for you to manage. It can help remove the anxiety, stress, discomfort, as well as awareness of the procedure. You will enjoy a relaxing sleep whilst you maintain your reflexes and are able to breathe for yourself, as well respond to us if required. It also can produce sensations of drowsiness, warmth and tingling in the injection area and elsewhere. In the dental setting, it will not induce unconsciousness. You will be able to swallow, talk and cough as needed.

Our practice is specially equipped for IV sedation treatments; as well as our staff which have additional training. However, as it administers an intravenous drug, certain precautions are necessary after the procedure to ensure a comfortable recovery. The effects of sedative medicine can take some time to wear off and your dentist will discuss how long you recovery will be.

More information on Inhalation sedation:

Nitrous oxide is a colourless, slightly sweet gas that is used during dental treatment for relaxation and anxiety relief. When inhaled, it can induce feelings of euphoria and sedation. It also can produce sensations of drowsiness, warmth and tingling in the hands, feet and/or about the mouth. In the dental setting, it will not induce unconsciousness. You will be able to swallow, talk and cough as needed.

Any Questions?

What is oral sedation?

Oral sedation is a way of making you feel more at ease during treatment. It doesn’t put you to sleep like a general anaesthetic; you’re still conscious and able to talk with your dentist. Instead, it puts you into a deeply relaxed state, where you won’t feel any discomfort or pain.

How is Oral sedation administered?

Oral sedation is administered by Intravenous (IV) sedation, where a sedative is injected into your vein, or you inhale a sedative gas through a mask that your dentist places over your nose and mouth.

How is oral sedation different to general anaesthesia?

Dental sedation is a technique whereby a sedative drug is given to help people relax. It is important to note that sedation is different to general anaesthesia. With sedation, you will stay awake but feel drowsy and much less aware of what is happening around you.

Will I be able to feel any pain during treatment?

The sedative drugs will not have the ability to numb the teeth, so a dental injection is still necessary. However, you will be in a much more relaxed state before numbing of the teeth is carried out.

Can children and teenagers have sedation?

The short answer is yes, but some sedation methods (for example intravenous) tend to be reserved for older teenagers or adults. As a rule, for people aged under 12 years old, the choice of sedation method would be inhalation sedation.

Why might I need oral sedation?

Sedation can be used during many treatments including wisdom tooth surgery, routine and complex tooth removals, jaw-joint issues, removal of lumps in the mouth and dental implants. Dentists may also recommend sedation for patients with complex medical histories or hidden disabilities and patients that suffer with dental anxiety.

How will I feel after oral sedation?

It is common to feel fatigued after any oral surgery procedure, especially if you have been sedated. Patients must be accompanied home by a relative or friend, and we recommend that you rest for the remainder of the day.
